This week, Congress will pass the 21st Century Cures Act, a massive 996-page bill that provides funding for a number of health research initiatives. At the last minute, Congress included language in the bill to delay implementation of Medicare fee schedule adjustments for Complex Rehab Technology (CRT) products and supporting services, such as wheelchair accessories and seating systems.
This is a victory for the mobility-impaired community, one achieved through the determination of advocates like you. CRT products include individually configured manual and power wheelchairs, seating and positioning systems, and other adaptive devices designed to meet the person’s unique medical and functional needs. Access to this specialized equipment is critical to enabling them to address their medical needs, minimize their healthcare costs, and maximize their independence.
Our victory, however, is a short-lived one. The legislation provides just a six-month delay in the Medicare fee schedule adjustment, making it imperative that we keep pressure on Congress to more fully examine this issue next year and put a permanent solution put in place.
Please take just a moment to thank your legislators for passing the 21st Century Cures Act, and let them know that we’ll be working with them in early 2017 to enact policies to assure continued access to this specialized equipment for the people with disabilities who depend on it. Add your information at the right to send your message; the process will take just two minutes, but can make a big difference.
Thank you for your continued advocacy efforts!
